A part of our wooden beds are available in different finishes for you to choose from. You will find great quality products at affordable prices easily here. The type of wood we use in wooden beds include oak, ash, cherry, maple, pine, walnut, mahogany, pine, mango and heavea. You will discover each bed has more to it than meets the eye...

How much do you know about the wood?
OAK

Oak wood has a density of about 0.75 g/cm³, great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. Heavy, hard and strong with outstanding wear-resistance. Moderate stability in use. Very durable heartwood. A classic wood, usually with a tight grain. There are two main groups; red oak and white oak. White oak is considered superior as its grain has a finer texture. All oak lends itself to the French polisher’s art, accepting a huge spectrum of stains, finishes and colours. Previously used mainly in traditional farmhouse style furniture, many designers are now using oak in cutting edge furniture designs.

Rubber wood (Heavea)

Rubberwood is a hardwood from the maple family of woods
Rubberwood has very little tendency to warp or crack
Rubberwood - Eco Friendly !

Rubberwood is often the most misunderstood species of wood in the furniture industry. In fact, rubberwood is one of the more durable woods used in the manufacturing of today’s home furnishings. As a member of the maple family, rubberwood has a dense grain character that is easily controlled in the kiln drying process. Rubberwood has very little shrinkage making it one of the more stable construction materials available for furniture manufacturing. Like maple, rubberwood is a sap producing species. In the case of maple, it is sap; in the case of rubberwood, it is latex. Rubberwood produces all the latex used in the world for all rubber based products.

There is one more important feature of rubberwood that is very important in today’s world. Rubberwood is the most ecologically “friendly” wood used in today’s furniture industry. After the economic life of the rubber tree, which is generally 26-30 years, the latex yields become extremely low and the planters then fell the rubber trees and plant new ones. So, unlike other woods that are cut down for the sole purpose of producing furniture, rubberwood is used only after it completes it’s latex producing cycle and dies. This wood is therefore eco-friendly in the sense that we are now using what was going as waste.

ASH

The wood is hard (a hardwood), tough and very strong but elastic, extensively used for making bows, tool handles, quality wooden baseball bats, hurley sticks and other uses demanding high strength and resilience. Ash veneers are extensively used in office furniture. Moderately heavy, hard, strong, and tough with moderately high shock resistance, good dimensional stability, and poor decay resistance. With a strong grain, this durable hardwood is usually light in weight and colour. It has good flexibility for making tables and chairs.

MAHOGANY

Moderately heavy and hard with medium bending and crushing strength, low stiffness and shock resistance, moderate decay resistance, and good stability in use. Mahogany varies from yellowish, reddish, pinkish, or salmon colored when freshly cut, to a deep rich red, to reddish brown as the wood matures with age. Mahogany is fine to medium texture, with uniform to interlocking grain, ranging from straight to wavy or curly. Irregularities in the grain often produce highly attractive figures such as fiddleback or mottle. Mahogany polishes to a high luster, with excellent working and finishing characteristics. Mahogany is regarded by many as the world's premier wood for fine cabinetry, high-class furniture, trimming fine boats, pianos and other musical instruments, sculpture, joinery, turnery, figured and decorative veneer, interior trim, and carving. It has excellent workability, and is very durable and slow to rot. These properties make it a favorable wood for boat making, as tradition has shown, as well as for making furniture and upholstery.

A tropical hardwood found across the globe, mahogany has a reddish patina and elaborate grain.

CHERRY

A durable hardwood often used as a veneer because it is expensive to produce. Its characteristic red colour often deepens to a richer shade in time. The grain may be enhanced by dark speckles of sap. Moderately hard and heavy, strong, stiff, and quite stable in service. Heartwood has good decay resistance.

MAPLE

Moderately heavy, hard, strong, and stiff with low shock resistance and decay resistance, and medium movement in use. Mainly used as a veneer, maple is a hardwood with a light swirling grain. Sometimes ‘sugaring’, an accumulation of sap in the tree’s fibres, creates darker lines. The highly decorative bird’s-eye maple is produced when grown buds form on the tree’s bark but do not penetrate it. When sawn, this produces a grain that resembles ‘watered silk’. This is also used as a veneer.

ALDER

Premium alder is also known as Red Alder or Western Alder. Alder is a hardwood, which is deciduous, the botanical group of trees that have broad leaves, produce a fruit or nut, and generally go dormant in the winter. However, it is softer than cherry. Appearance: Straight grained and even textured no distinct grain pattern. Very consistent in color, from pale yellow to reddish. Now mainly comes from the USA and Spain, it is very similar in look to cherry wood.

WALNUT

Walnut and its allies, are important for their attractive timber, which is hard, dense, tight-grained and polishes to a very smooth finish. The colour ranges from creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate colour in the heartwood. When kiln-dried, walnut wood tends toward a dull brown colour, but when air-dried can become a rich purplish-brown. Because of its colour, hardness and grain it is a prized furniture and carving wood. Moderately heavy, hard, strong, and stiff, with good decay resistance and dimensional stability. Veneer sliced from walnut burl is one of the most valuable and highly prized by cabinet makers and prestige car manufacturers.

Grown across the world, the wood from each producing country has its own peculiarities. American walnut has a distinctive black grain and is often known as ‘black walnut’. Wood from Italy is similar. English walnut has strong dark streaks; it is extremely rare and usually only found in antique furniture. French and Turkish walnuts have highly figured grains and are commonly used as veneers.

PINE

Several varieties of this fast growing softwood, including Scots pine, Douglas fir and Norway spruce, supply the furniture industry. The trees’ sources of origin will dictate rich variation of colours from pale cream through to a red brown. Pine has a close grain caused by the short growing seasons high in the northern hemisphere, and will feature knots, marking the point on a tree trunk where a branch or side shoot once grew.
